As Greer walked through the lobby of the Mirage, Katherine’s words came back to her. She had to give her mother credit. The woman knew how to direct an entrance. Greer found a path through the crowd opening up before her on the sheer force of her magnetism alone.

Normally she would never have gone among humans with her appetite on such a razor’s edge, but tonight she found her effect on the boisterous chaos of the casino enthralling.

Nature designed the hunger of the baobhan sith to lure unsuspecting men, to lower their defenses, and to deepen their preoccupation with the moment. Oblivious to the consequences, any of them would have followed Greer had she so much as looked in their direction.

But she did not look. She simply moved — like a stalking cat, languid in an ebony mandarin jacket, with gold threads woven through the fasteners and diamonds studding the buttons. Floating through glittering prisms of reflected light, Greer allowed her hunger to bank the smoldering embers of her power, well aware of the effect she had on those around her.

As she approached the door to a private room, a man in dark glasses barred her passage, but she saw the heavy swallow that constricted his throat as she drew nearer.

“Tarathiel,” Greer said, the elven name flowing from her lips like honeyed wine. “Don’t be tiresome. I do love what you’ve done with your tips.”

The elf ran a finger self-consciously over his newly rounded ears but said nothing.

“Surely Fer Dorich has not become so incapable of wielding his magic that he required you to submit to physical mutilation rather than be detected by the humans?” Greer purred. “That would aggrieve me terribly.”

From beyond the door, a man’s voice said, “Let her in, Tarathiel, if you can still remember how to use a doorknob.”

Grimacing, the bodyguard held the door open for Greer to pass, inhaling sharply when she trailed one manicured nail over the lapel of his jacket.

Inside the room, the baobhan sith found the Dark Druid playing cards with four Sídhe nobles. Inclining her head, she spoke to them in Elvish. Without hesitation, the men folded their cards, collected their chips, and left.

Sighing, Fer Dorich threw his hand down on the table. “I wish you hadn’t done that,” he complained. “You scared off my opponents when I had a winning hand. Shall I order dinner for you? Maybe a nice software engineer from the convention next door?”

“No thank you,” Greer said, claiming one of the empty chairs. “I prefer to select my own cuisine. Do you know what the humans call the combination of cards you are holding?”

Fer Dorich fanned out aces and eights in front of him. “No,” he said. “What do they call it?”

“A Dead Man’s hand.”

He let out a sharp laugh. “An ironic bit of information coming from a hungry baobhan sith,” he said. “To what do I owe the honor of your company, Greer MacVicar?”

“I’ve come to inquire about your relocation to Las Vegas.”

“Have you now,” he said, his smile taking on a dangerous edge.
